Building Bridges in Biomedicine (Croatia-USA)

On Monday, 21 September, the Harvard Medical Postdoc Association co-hosted Building Bridges in Biomedicine with Med&X in the Waterhouse Room at Harvard Medical School. The evening brought together postdocs, faculty and clinicians from across Boston, from institutions including Harvard Medical School, Mass General Brigham, Boston Children's Hospital and MIT, with Croatian physicians and scientists working in the greater Boston area and colleagues from Croatia.

The evening set out to connect researchers and physicians who might otherwise never meet, and to turn those introductions into collaborations. In a series of short presentations, speakers shared what they work on, the questions driving their labs and clinics, and the kinds of partners they are looking for. The conversations carried on long after the talks, across disciplines, career stages and countries.

Evenings like this matter especially for postdocs, because they open doors to new collaborators, new projects and international opportunities early in a career. Thank you to every presenter and every participant for the ideas, the questions and the new connections. We look forward to seeing the collaborations that started in that room grow.

Primed Inaugural Event - Biotech Company Building Showcase

Co-organized by the PRIMED Boston Chapter and HMPA, the inaugural PRIMED Boston Biotech Company Building Showcase launched the 2026–2027 PRIMED Boston Chapter series.

The event featured keynote speaker Prof. Harvey F. Lodish, PRIMED founder Prof. Sir Tony Kouzarides, panelists Prof. Elliot L. Chaikof and Maggie O’Toole, and moderator Prof. Cigall Kadoch. Dr. Silvia Fanton and Dr. Utsa Bhaduri, co-chairs of the HMPA Entrepreneurship Committee, took the lead in organizing the event, which was very well received by attendees.

HMPA Postdoc Spotlight Blitz

Our first Postdoc Spotlight Blitz was a success! We gathered scientists from HMS and affiliated hospitals who got to present their research in a flash-format presentations!

The winners were:

1st Prize: Jenna Lin, Cell Biology, Corey Allard Lab – "Investigating the cellular and neural basis of novel organ functions"

2nd Prize: Frank Yeh, Otolaryngology, Indzhykulian Lab – "Stretching the Limits of Inner Ear Tip Link Proteins"

3rd Prize: Kamalakkannan Ravi, Division of Genetics and Genomics, BCH / HMS – "Reclassification Is All You Missed: When Genetic Test Results Quietly Change, Who Finds Out?"

Audience award: Juyeun Lee, Ophthalmology – "Risk of Non-Arteritic Ischemic Optic Neuropathy in Individuals with Sickle Cell Disease and Sickle Cell Trait"

Postdoc Happy Hour May 14th 2026

We hosted an Harvard Medical Postdoc Association (HMPA) and the HMS/HSDM Office for Postdoctoral Fellows (OPF) happy hour where postdocs gathered to play boardgames and have some snacks/drinks. Here are a few images of the event!

Inaugural HMPA US–Europe Entrepreneurship Lecture 2026

Sir Tony Kouzarides, FRS, of the University of Cambridge, UK, delivered the HMPA Inaugural US–Europe Entrepreneurship Lecture 2026. The session was moderated by Prof. Cigall Kadoch of Harvard Medical School, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).

Sir Tony spoke about his academic entrepreneurship journey, with over 100,000+ citations and the creation of several multi-million-dollar companies, including Abcam. He also introduced his upcoming initiative, PRIMED, which is set to launch in Boston by fall 2026 to support entrepreneurial postdocs in the Boston area.
